Age-related macular degeneration- Classification and Pathogenesis
İmren AkkoyunBaskent University, Faculty Of Medicine, Department Of Ophthalmology, Ankara, TurkeyAge-related macular degeneration (AMD) is first described in 1885 by Otto Haab as a disease for patients above 50 years with progressive RPE and atrophic degenerations of the macula reducing central visual acuity. AMD is a neurodegenerative disease and is now the most cause of registriable blindness in the western world. The prevalence of the disease is given with 10% between 65-75 years of old and with 25% after 75 of age. AMD is a multi-faceted and complex condition. Although different forms of AMD share some common underlying pathological features and causes, there are unique drivers for each form. Effective therapies will be derived from in-depth knowledge about each subtype of AMD, and tailored to address the specific needs in each disease subtype.

İmren AkkoyunBaşkent Üniversitesi, Tıp Fakültesi, Göz Hastalıkları Anabilim Dalı, Ankara, TürkiyeYaşa bağlı makula dejenerasyonu (YBMD) ilk defa 1885’ te Otto Haab tarafından 50 yaş üzerindeki olgularda makulada pigmenter ve atrofik değişikliklerle giden ve merkezi görme keskinliğinde ilerleyici azalma ile karakterize bir klinik görünüm olarak tanımlanmıştır. Günümüzde YBMD maküler nörodejeneratif hastalık olarak tarif edilmektedir. Sıklığı 65-75 yaş arasında %10, 75 yaş üzerinde %25 olarak bulunmuştur, bu nedenle önemli bir toplum sağlığı sorunudur. YBMD çok boyutlu, karmaşık ve kompleks bir hastalıktır. YBMD nin çeşitli tipleri bazı müşterek özellikler ve etyolojik nedenler paylaşsalarda her tipin kendine has patolojik mekanizması mevcuttur. Her tip YBMD için detaylı bilgilere dayanarak hedefe yönelik spesifik etkili tedaviler geliştirilmelidir.
