Correlation Between the Carotid Artery Intima Media Thickness and Gama Glutamyl Transferase Level In Maras Powder Users

INTRODUCTION: In this study, we aimed to evaluate carotid artery intima-media thickness (CIMT), an early marker of atherosclerosis in smokers and Maras powder users, and serum gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) levels which is a marker of oxidative damage.
METHODS: The study included 27 men who don’t smoke but use maras powder, 32 men who smokes but don’t use maras powder and 30 men who neither smoke nor use Maras powder as the control group. Serum levels of GGT and lipid profiles were measured and the results were compared between the groups. CIMT was measured by Doppler ultrasonography (USG).
RESULTS: Mean CIMT was found as 0.79±0.09 mm, 0.74±0.08 mm and 0.55±0.08 mm in Maras powder, smoking and control groups; respectively. The difference among the groups was statistically significant (p<0,001). Plasma levels of total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and triglyceride were significantly higher in Maras powder and smoking groups than in the control group (p<0.001). Plasma levels of HDL-cholesterol levels were significantly lower in Maras powder and smoking groups than in the control group (p<0.001). Serum GGT levels were found significantly higher in Maras powder and smoking groups compared to the control group (p<0.001).
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: The present study reveals that Maras powder is as effective as cigarette smoking on increase of oxidative stress which plays a role in the pathogenesis of many diseases. Our results suggest that CIMT is an important marker of cardiovascular complications in Maras powder users and smokers as a noninvasive method.

Maraş Otu Kullananlarda Karotis Arter İntima Media Kalınlığı Ve Serum Gama Glutamil Transferaz Düzeyi İle İlişkisi

GİRİŞ ve AMAÇ: Bu çalışmada, Maraş otu kullanıcılarında ve sigara içenlerde, aterosklerozun erken bir göstergesi olan karotis arter intima media kalınlığı (KİMK) ve oksidatif hasarın bir belirteci olan serum gama glutamil trasnferaz (GGT) düzeyini değerlendirmeyi amaçladık.
YÖNTEM ve GEREÇLER: Maraş otu kullanan ancak sigara içmeyen 27 erkek olgu, sadece sigara kullanan 32 erkek olgu, sigara ya da Maraş otu kullanmayan 30 erkek olgu ise kontrol grubu olarak çalışmaya alındı. Serum levels of GGT and lipid profiles were measured and compared between the groups. Dopler ultrasonografi ile karotis arter IMT ölçüldü.
BULGULAR: Karotis arter İMK ortalamaları sırasıyla Maraş otu grubunda 0.79±0.09 mm, sigara grubunda 0.74±0.08 mm; kontrol grubunda ise 0.55±0.08 mm olarak bulundu ve bu fark istatistiksel olarak anlamlıydı. (p<0,05). Plasma total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, triglyceride levels were significantly higher in Maras powder and cigarette smokers group than in the nontobacco user group (p<0.001). Plasma HDL-cholesterol levels were significantly lower in Maras powder and cigarette smokers group than in the nontobacco user group (p<0.001). Serum GGT levels were found significantly higher in Maras powder and cigarette smokers group compared to the nontobacco user group (p<0.001).
TARTIŞMA ve SONUÇ: Çalışmamızın sonuçları, Maraş otunun bir çok kronik hastalığın patogenezinde
yer alan oksidatif stres artışında sigara kadar etkili olduğunu, karotis IMK düzeyinin, Maraş otu ve sigara kullananlarda, kardiyovasküler komplikasyonlarını tespit etmek için kullanılabilecek invazif olmayan bir inceleme yöntemi olması açısından önemli olduğunu düşündürmektedir.
