Purpose: Considering the limited number of studies conducted on obstetric and neonatal outcomes of adolescent pregnancies in Turkey, the purpose of this study is to investigate obstetric and neonatal outcomes of pregnant adolescents in our hospital.
Material and methods: In this study, pregnancy and birth records of both under 19 year old and over 19 year old pregnant women, who gave single and alive birth over 20 weeks at the same period and were admitted to Pregnancy Clinic of Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Faculty of Medicine at Cukurova University between 01.01.2008 and 01.08.2011, were retrospectively examined. SPSS 19.0 statistical program package was used for data analysis. For the statistical significance between results, p value was taken as <0,05.
Results: Preterm birth (37.5%, 21.6%), pre-eclampsia (31.3%, 14.7%), intrauterine grwth restriction (20%, 9.8%), fetal distress (20%, 8.8%), congenital anomalies (16.3%, 5.9%), and anemia (40%, 12.7%) were identified significantly higher for the adolescent group compared to the non-adolescent group (p <0.05). In terms of observation of placental anomalies, oligohydramnios, gestational diabetes, and macrosomia, there was no significant difference between groups.
Conclusion: Significantly higher rates in preterm birth, pre-eclampsia, fetal distress, and congenital anomalies for pregnant adolescents indicate that there is an increased risk of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality for adolescent pregnancies.
