Ethical Problems Related to Surrogate Motherhood

Being unable to have children is an important problem for married couples. At present, new reproduction techniques help these couples while those who can not find any solution try new approaches. One of these is the phenomenon of surrogate motherhood,
which is based upon an agreement between the infertile couple and surrogate mother. Surrogate mother may conceive with the sperm of the male of the involved couple as well as by the transfer of the embryo formed by invitro fertilization. Couples who
choose to have a child born from a pregnancy or to whom they are genetically partially connected rather than adopting a child give rise to the emergence of some ethical problems. Traditional family notion based upon having children after the union of the
reproductive cells of the mother and father do not receive the pheneomenon of surrogate mother favourably. Such practices are criticised as they are far from being natural and other ethical problems are faced in the implementation.

Çocuk sahibi olamamak evli çiftler için önemli bir problemdir. Günümüzde yeni üreme teknikleri çiftlere bu konuda yardımcı olurken, yine de çözüm bulamayanlar, başka arayışlara girmektedir. Söz konusu arayışlardan birisi çocuk sahip olamayan çift
ile taşıyıcı anne arasındaki anlaşmaya bağlı olarak gelişen taşıyıcı annelik olgusudur. Taşıyıcı anne, erkeğe ait sperm ile hamile kalabileceği gibi invitro döllenmeyle meydana gelen embriyonun uterusa transferi ile de hamile kalabilmektedir. Evlat edinme
alternatifine karşı, gebe bir anneden alınan ya da kısmen de olsa genetik bağlantının bulunduğu bir çocuğa sahip olmayı yeğleyen çiftlerin bu girişimleri bazı etik sorunların ortaya çıkmasına neden olmaktadır. Anne ve babanın üreme hücrelerinin biraraya gelmesi sonucu çocuk sahibi olmak üzerine kurulu geleneksel aile anlayışı taşıyıcı annelik olgusuna fazla olumlu yanaşmamaktadır. Bu tür uygulamalar “doğallıktan” uzak olması nedeniyle ilkesel olarak karşı çıkıldığı gibi pratikte de başka etik sorunlarla da karşılaşılmaktadır.
