Expectations of Visually Impaired Children and Parents from Ophthalmologists: Pilot Study

AIM: To acquire information about the expectations of visually impaired children and their families from ophthalmologists.
METHOD: A questionnaire was applied to 22 students with low vision and their families, who admitted for a low vision examination. In the questionnaire, the subjects were asked about the expectations from the ophthalmologists and the perception of former eye examinations; under general, examination-attitude and information subheadings.
FINDINGS: Regarding the subjects who answered the questionnaire, the ratio of the impression of perceiving the examinations adequate is 55 % in children and 42 % in families. The answers about the general satisfaction of the children from the examinations are 45 % good satisfaction, 50 % moderate satisfaction and 5 % low satisfaction. Although the general impression about the examinations and the attitudes are reported to be mostly satisfactory, there found to be a dissatisfaction of 56 percent in the area of giving enough information about the disease. Patients reported that, they don’t want to hear negative and pity expressions from eye doctors. The majority also reported that, they want to attend to mainstream schools instead of schools for visually impaired.
DISCUSSION: Visual impairment, which affects hundreds of thousands of people in our country, is an important concern for the patients, their families, the society and the professions who serve them. Although the study group is small, the study is important, because it searches the perceptions about the attitudes of the ophthalmologists, by the children with visual impairment and their families. Having information about the expectations of the children with visual impairment and their families; will help to improve the health and rehabilitation care and also will contribute them to live a more satisfactory and productive life.

Görme Özürlü Çocuk ve Ebeveyninin Göz Hekiminden Beklentileri: Ön Çalışma

AMAÇ: Görme özürlü çocuklar ve ailelerinin göz hekimlerinden beklentilerini belirlemek.
YÖNTEM: Bu çalışmada az görme muayenesi yapılan görme engelliler okulu öğrencisi 22 olgu ve 22 yakınına, göz hekimlerinden beklentilerini belirlemeye yönelik bir anket uygulanmıştır. Ankette daha önce yapılan göz muayenelerini; genel, muayene-davranış ve bilgilendirme alt başlıkları altında değerlendirmeleri istenmiş; beklentileri öğrenilmeye çalışılmıştır.
SONUÇLAR: Anket sorularına yanıt verenler değerlendirildiğinde göz muayenelerini genel olarak yeterli bulma oranı çocuklarda % 55, yakınlarında % 42’dir. Çocukların genel olarak muayeneleri algılamaları ile ilgili yanıtları % 45 iyi, % 50 orta, % 5 kötü olarak belirtilmiştir. Muayenelerle ilgili genel izlenim ve muayenedeki davranışlar nispeten olumlu bildirilirken; hastalıkla ilgili bilgilendirmeyi çocukların % 56’sı yetersiz olarak bildirmiştir. Hastalar durumlarıyla ilgili olumsuz ve ümitsiz mesajlar taşıyan ifadeleri duymak istemediklerini; özürlüler okulu yerine “normal” eğitim görülen okullarda eğitim görmek istediklerini ifade etmişlerdir.
TARTIŞMA: Görme özürlülük ülkemizde etkilediği yüz binlerce kişiyi, ailelerini ve onlara hizmet veren meslek grupları ile toplumu da ilgilendiren bir konudur. Çalışma grubu küçük de olsa, hekim davranışlarının hastalar ve yakınları gözüyle nasıl algılandığı ile ilgili olması nedeniyle önem taşımaktadır. Görme özürlülerin beklentilerinin bilinmesi, onlara verilecek sağlık ve rehabilitasyon hizmetlerinin geliştirilmesine ve daha doyurucu, üretici bir yaşam sürmelerine katkı sağlayacaktır.
