Late Term Visual Adequateness of Driver Licence Holders

Materials&Methods: A total of 160 driving licence holders with a mean age of 48.39 ± 10.86 (range, 21 and 73) who attended to our outpatient clinic underwent routine ophthalmologic examination and their driver licence data were evaluated under their consent.
Results: The spectacle need for 160 people who got their driving licence with a mean of 19.46 ± 10.07 (21-73) years ago was 26/160 (16.25%) by the time they got their licence, whereas 118/160 (73.75%) by the date we evaluated. Six people (3.75%) were not using spectacles although they had refractive errors that should be corrected to be able to drive by law, and 2 people (1.25%) had driving licence although they did not have enough visual acuity to get a driving licence. The first ophthalmologic examination that these 160 cases had was a mean of 12.29 ± 8.21 (1-25) years after they got their driving licence.
Conclusion: When compared with the time people first got their driving licence, the rate of refractive errors that affected visual acuity was increased 5 fold in a mean of twenty years. In our country the inspection of motor vehicles after the third year of their landing and then in every two years is obligatory. The periodic health evaluation of the drivers are only obligatory if there is a detected progressive eye disease by the time they get their driving licence. As there is no obligation for periodic examination, people who were healthy when getting the driving licence can drive life long, even if they lose the availability of driving. We think that in order to decrease the amount of traffic accidents in our country, not only motor vehicles but also driving licence holders should have obligatory periodic health evaluation.

Gereç ve Yöntem: Polikliniğimize başvuran yaş ortalaması 48.39 ± 10.86 (21 ila 73 arası) olan sürücü belgesi sahibi 160 kişi rutin göz muayenesine tabi tutuldu ve onamları dahilinde sürücü belgesi bilgileri elde edildi.
Bulgular: Ortalama 19.46 ± 10.07 (21-73) yıl önce sürücü belgesi almış 160 kişinin gözlük gereksinimi oranı sürücü belgesi aldıkları muayenede 26/160 (%16.25) iken, muayene tarihimizde 118/160’a (%73.75) idi. Altı kişi (%3.75) yasal açıdan zorunluluk gerektiren düzeyde görme keskinliğini düşüren refraksiyon kusuru varlığına karşın gözlük kullanmamakta olup, 2 kişi (%1.25) gözlük kullansa dahi yeterli görme seviyesini yakalayamadığı halde halen geçerli sürücü belgesine sahip idi. Bu 160 olgunun sürücü belgesi aldıktan sonraki ilk göz muayeneleri ortalama 12.29 ± 8.21 (1-25) yıl sonra yapılmıştı.
Sonuç: Sürücü belgesi edinme çağında yapılan göz muayeneleriyle karşılaştırıldığında, sürücü belgesi sahiplerinde görmeyi etkileyen refraksiyon kusuru oranı, ortalama 20 yılda yaklaşık 5 kat artmıştır. Ülkemizde motorlu taşıma araçlarının üretimden sonraki 3. yıldan başlayarak, her 2 yılda bir muayenesinin zorunludur. Sürücülerin sağlık şartlarına ait periyodik bir muayene zorunluluğu ise sadece sürücü belgesi aldıkları tarihte progresif bir göz hastalıkları mevcutsa söz konusudur. Sürücü belgesi alındığında, sağlıklı olan kimseler, sonradan yeterli olmasalar dahi, sonradan muayene zorunlulukları bulunmadığından, aynı belge ile ömür boyu araç kullanabilmektedir. Ülkemizdeki trafik kazalarının azaltılması için araçlar kadar, sürücü muayenelerinin de zorunlu ve periyodik hale getirilmesi gerektiğini düşünmekteyiz.
