Rose K lenses for keratoconus

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty one eyes of 17 patients with keratoconus were fitted with Rose K contact lens (CL) in the Cornea Department at the Ümraniye Training and Research Hospital between March 2011 and June 2011. The demographic characteristics, values of refraction, best spectacle-corrected visual acuity, corneal topography of patients, CL parameters and visual acuity with the CL were evaluated.
RESULTS: Thirty one eyes of 17 patients with keratoconus were fitted with Rose-K contact lenses. Seven patients were male and 10 patients were female, the mean age was 24.59±7.28 years. The mean spherical refractive power was -4.96±3.17 diopter (range: -0.25 to -11.75) and mean cylinder was -3.47±1.44 diopter (range: -1 to -6.5). The mean base curve of the lenses was 6.94 ± 0.49 mm and the mean power was -6.02±3.79 diopter. All patients were successfully fitted with the CL. Significant increase in visual acuity was obtained with Rose K lens compared to best-corrected spectacle visual acuity
CONCLUSİON: Significant increase in visual acuity can be obtained by Rose K contact lenses in patients with keratoconus. The quality and the quantity of vision are far better with CL than with spectacle correction.

Keratokonus Olgularında Rose K Kontakt Lens

GEREÇ VE YÖNTEMLER: Ümraniye Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi kornea bölümünde, Mart 2011 ve Haziran 2011 tarihleri arasında keratokonusu olan 17 hastanın 31 gözüne Rose K kontakt lens (KL) uygulandı. Hastaların demografik özellikleri, refraksiyon değerleri, gözlükle düzeltilmiş en iyi görme keskinlikleri, kornea topografisi, KL parametreleri ve KL ile görme keskinlikleri değerlendirildi.
BULGULAR: Keratokonusu olan 17 hastanın 31 gözüne Rose K kontakt lens uygulandı. Hastaların 7'si erkek, 10'u kadındı ve ortalama yaşları 24.59±7.28 yıl idi. Ortalama sferik refraksiyon -4.96±3.17 diyoptri (en az -0.25, en çok -11.75) ve ortalama silindir -3.47±1.44 diyoptri (en az -1, en çok -6.5) idi. Lensin ortalama temel eğrisi 6.94±0.49 mm ve ortalama gücü -6.02±3.79 diyoptri idi. KL tüm hastalara başarıyla uygulandı. Gözlükle düzeltilmiş en iyi görme keskinliği ile karşılaştırıldığında Rose K lens ile görme keskinliğinde belirgin bir artış sağlandı.
SONUÇ: Keratokonus hastalarında Rose K kontakt lensler ile görme keskinliklerinde belirgin bir artış sağlanabilmektedir. KL ile sağlanan görme kalitesi ve miktarı gözlükten çok daha iyidir.
