Uncontrolled Selling of Contact Lenses

Purpose: To evaluate the opticians’ perspective about selling and applying contact lenses (CL) in the provincial centre of Mersin.
Material-Method: Twenty opticians who work in the 4 main districts in the provincial centre of Mersin were included in the study. A questionnaire form which was prepared before were filled out by the participants.
Results: Seventy eight percent of the opticians were selling CL without prescription, whereas 25% also carried out its fitting. Seventy five percent of the participants did not get any education about contact lenses, while 65% of them were feeling themselves disqualified about CLs. Furthermore half of the participants did not have enough knowledge about the complications associated with CL usage and 75% of them wanted to exposition about CLs.
Discussion: As a result of the questionnaire, we found out that a significant part of the participants were both selling and fitting contact lenses without prescription. We believe that, auditing the opticians is as important as educating the contact lens users.
Kontrolsüz Kontakt Lens Satışı

Amaç: Mersin il merkezinde çalışan gözlükçülerin kontakt lens (KL) satışına ve kullanımına bakış açılarını değerlendirmek.
Gereç ve Yöntem: Mersin ili, 4 merkez ilçesinde yer alan toplam 20 gözlükçü çalışmaya dahil edildi. Daha önce hazırlanan anket formunun katılımcılar tarafından doldurulması sağlandı.
Sonuçlar: Çalışmaya alınan gözlükçülerin %78.9’u reçetesiz KL satışı yapıyorken, %25’i aynı zamanda KL uygulaması da yapıyordu. Katılımcıların %75’i KL’ler ile ilgili bilgilendirme almamışken, %65’i bilgi düzeyi yönünden kendisini yetersiz görüyordu. Ayrıca katılımcıların yarısı KL kullanımı sırasında ortaya çıkacak problemler konusunda yeterli bilgi sahibi değilken, %75’i KL’ler ile ilgi bilgilendirme almak istiyordu.
Tartışma: Bu anket sonucunda, çalışmamıza katılan satıcıların önemli bir kısmının reçetesiz olarak KL satışı ve uygulamasında bulunduğu görülmüştür. Komplikasyonların önüne geçilebilmesi için gözlükçülerin denetiminin yapılması, kullanıcıların eğitimi kadar önem taşımaktadır.
