A Major Public Health Problem: Uncontrolled Wearing of Contact Lenses

Purpose: To evaluate the behaviours and points of view of the contact lens wearers attending Mersin University.
Material-Method: Our study included the students from the faculty of medicine whom we would think that had the highest awareness about health topics and also the students from the faculty of education whom we hope to have the similar awareness. Considering the total number of students the minimum number of the students attending the faculty of education (n: 213) and the minimum number of students attending the faculty of medicine (n: 230) that must be included to the study were calculated. Then we wanted this students to answer our survey.
Results: The mean age of students attending the study was 21.29±2.14 years and the 62.5% of the participants were female. Among all of the students 81% were wearing contact lenses to correct their refractive errors and 12% of the students were wearing the contact lenses to enhance appearance for cosmetic reasons. Also 51% of the students were getting the contact lenses with prescription and the rest of the students without it. Furthermore, 47.3% of the participants had got the basic information about contact lenses from their doctors; while the rest had got this information from other sources. 43.9% of the participants were visiting their doctors regularly during wearing contact lenses.
Discussion: Serious complications and irreversible visual loss as a result of this serious complications can occur due to contact lens wear. So we think that contact lenses should not accept as simple medical devices.
Önemli Bir Halk Sağlığı Sorunu: Kontrolsüz Kontakt Lens Kullanımı

Amaç: Mersin Üniversitesi’nde öğrenim gören öğrencilerin kontakt lens kullanımı sırasındaki tutum ve davranışlarını, konuya bakış açılarını değerlendirmek.
Gereç ve Yöntem: Mersin Üniversitesi öğrencileri arasında sağlık konusunda bilinç düzeyinin en yüksek olabileceğini düşündüğümüz Tıp Fakültesi öğrencileri ve benzer bilinç düzeyinin olabileceğini beklediğimiz Eğitim Fakültesi öğrencileri araştırma kapsamına alındı. Toplam öğrenci sayıları göz önüne alınarak Eğitim Fakültesinden (n=213) ve Tıp Fakültesinden (n=230) çalışmaya dahil edilmesi gereken en az öğrenci sayıları hesaplandı ve her iki fakülteden toplam 443 öğrenci çalışmaya dahil edildi. Çalışmaya alınan öğrencilere daha önce hazırlanmış anket formları dağıtıldı ve buradaki soruları cevaplamaları istendi.
Sonuçlar: Çalışmaya alınan öğrencilerin yaş ortalaması 21.29 ± 2.14 yıl idi ve %62.5’ini kız öğrenciler oluşturuyordu. Öğrencilerin %81’i kontakt lensi kırma kusurunu düzeltmek amacıyla, %17’si ise estetik amaçlı olarak kullanmaktaydı. Katılımcıların %51’i kontakt lensi doktor reçetesiyle almakta iken geri kalan kısım kontakt lensi reçetesiz olarak temin etmekteydi. Yine benzer şekilde katılımcıların %47.3’ü kontakt lens ile ilgili temel bilgileri doktordan almış ancak kalan kısmı çeşitli kaynaklardan bu bilgilere ulaşmıştı. Katılımcıların yalnızca %43.9’luk kısmı kontakt lens kullanımı sırasında düzenli doktor kontrolüne devam etmekteydi.
Tartışma: Kontakt lens kullanımı sırasında ciddi komplikasyonlar ortaya çıkabilmekte ve bu komplikasyonların sonucunda geri dönüşümsüz görme kayıpları gelişebilmektedir. Bu nedenle kontakt lenslerin günlük kullanımda basit tıbbi araçlar olarak görülmemesi gerektiğini düşünmekteyiz.
