The role of mast cells in pathogenesis of primary and recurrent pterygium

Purpose: In this study, it is aimed to investigate the roles of mast cells in pterygium pathogenesis and to compare the number of mast cells in primary and recurrent pterygium.

Material and Method:
It is evaluated 1 eye of 49 outpatients with pterygium and 2 eyes of 1 outpatient with pterygium. Twenty-eight of pterygium tissues were primary type, twenty-three of them were recurrent type. As control group, normal conjunctival tissues in the upper temporale location of same eyes were included. The numbers of mast cells in the tissues of primary pterygium group, recurrent pterygium group and control group were compared.

Results: There was statistically significant higher the mean mast cell number in the pterygium tissues (8,9±6,5) than the mean mast cell number in the control tissues (6,0±4,7) (p=0,000). In spite of higher the mean mast cell number in the recurrent pterygium tissues (9,3±7,4) than the mean mast cell number in the primary pterygium tissues (8,5±5,3), there wasn’t statistically significant (p=0,68).

Discussion: These results suggest that mast cell plays an important role in pterygium pathogenesis. Furthermore, more studies are necessary to indicate the difference between primary pterygium and recurrent pterygium

Amaç: Bu araştırmada, pterjium patogenezinde mast hücrelerinin rolü ve primer pterjium ile nüks pterjium dokularındaki mast hücre sayılarının karşılaştırılması amaçlandı.

Gereç ve Yöntem: Pterjiumu bulunan 49 olgunun tek gözü 1 olgunun da iki gözü araştırmaya alındı. Dokuların 28’i primer 23’ü ise nüks pterjiuma ait idi. Kontrol grubu olarak aynı göz üst temporal kadrandaki normal konjonktiva dokusu alındı. Primer pterjium, nüks pterjium ve kontrol grubunun dokularındaki mast hücre sayıları karşılaştırıldı.

Sonuçlar: Pterjium dokusundaki ortalama mast hücresi sayısı (8,9±6,5) normal konjonktiva dokusundaki ortalama mast hücre sayısından (6,0±4,7) istatistiksel olarak anlamlı fazla idi (p=0.0001). Nüks pterjium dokularındaki ortalama mast hücre sayısı (9,3±7,4) primer pterjium dokusundaki ortalama mast hücre sayısından (8,5±5,3) fazla olmasına rağmen istatistiksel olarak anlamlı değil idi (p=0,68).

Tartışma: Bu sonuçlar mast hücresinin pterjium patogenezinde önemli bir rol oynadığını göstermektedir. Ayrıca, primer ve nüks pterjium arasındaki farkı göstermek açısından daha fazla araştırmaya gereksinim vardır.
