Evaluation of follow-up and treatment results in Coats disease

Materials and methods: Medical records of 27 patients diagnosed with Coats disease in our clinic were reviewed retrospectively. All patients underwent complete ophthalmological examination and fundus photography was taken. Stages and treatment options were recorded.
Results: Twenty seven eyes of twenty seven patients included in the study. Mean age was 9.06 years and 21 of patients were male and 6 were female. Three patients were older than 18 years old. Based on the Shields classification; 1 (3.7%) eye was stage 2A, 4 (14.8%) eyes were stage 2B, 6 (22.2%) were stage 3A1, 3 (11.1%) were stage 3A2, 1 (3.7%) was stage 3B, 4 (14.8%) were stage 4 and 8 (29.6%) were stage 5. Treatment was done in 14 patients and combined treatment in 12 patients. The most common treatment modalities were laser photocoagulation and cryotherapy. Encircling band was done in one patient and pars plana vitrectomy in 3 patients. Enucleation was done in 5 patients.
Conclusions: Coats disease is a chronic disease and main target is to eliminate the vascular anomalies and their complications with repetetive, combination therapies. Treatment in early stages can lead to a functional success, and in advanced stages leads to a salvagable eye.
Coats hastalığında takip ve tedavi sonuçlarının değerlendirilmesi

Gereç ve yöntem: Kliniğimizde Coats hastalığı tanısı konulan 27 hastanın dosyaları geriye dönük incelendi. Tüm olgulara tam oftalmolojik muayene yapıldı ve fundus fotoğrafları çekildi. Hastaların evreleri ve tedavi şekilleri kaydedildi.
Bulgular: Çalışmaya 27 hastanın 27 gözü dahil edildi. Ortalama yaşı 9.03 yıl olan hastaların 21’i erkek, 6’sı kadın idi. Hastaların üçü 18 yaş üstündeydi. Shield sınıflandırmasına göre; 1 (%3.7) gözde evre 2A, 4 (%14.8) gözde evre 2B, 6 (%22.2) gözde evre 3A1, 3 (%11.1) gözde evre 3A2, 1 (%3.7) gözde evre 3B, 4 (%14.8) gözde evre 4 ve 8 (%29.6) gözde evre 5 saptandı. 14 hastada tedavi uygulandı ve bunların 12’sinde kombine tedavi yapıldı. En sık yapılan tedavi şekli laser fotokoagülasyon ve kriyoterapi idi. Bir hastada skleral band serklaj ve 3 hastada pars plana vitrektomi yapıldı. 5 hastada enükleasyon yapıldı.
Sonuç: Coats hastalığı kronik bir hastalıktır ve ana hedef tekrarlayan kombine tedaviler ile vasküler anomalilerin ve bunlara bağlı komplikasyonların ortadan kaldırılmasıdır. Tedaviler erken evrede fonksiyonel başarıya yol açabilir, daha ilerlemiş hastalıkta ise gözün korunmasına yardımcı olabilmektedir.
