Orbital Apex Syndrome Secondary to Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicus

Orbital apex syndrome is a rare complication of herpes zoster ophthalmicus. We have observed orbital apex syndrome in a case that was followed up for herpes zoster ophthalmicus in the 2nd week of his treatment. Clinical diagnosis was supported by magnetic resonance imaging. Total improvement of ophthalmoplegia was achieved at the 2nd month with systemic steroid and antiviral treatments. However, optic neuropathy induced visual loss was permanent. This case-report reviews orbital apex syndrome secondary to herpes zoster ophthalmicus, which is also scarce in body of ophthalmology literature.

Orbital apeks sendromu, herpes zoster oftalmikusun nadir görülen bir komplikasyonudur. Kliniğimizde herpes zoster oftalmikus nedeniyle takip ettiğimiz bir hastamızda tedavinin 2. haftasında orbital apeks sendromu görülmüştür. Manyetik rezonans görüntüleme ile klinik tanı desteklenmiş ve sistemik steroid, antiviral tedavilerle 2. ayda oftalmoplejide tam düzelme görülmüştür. Ancak optik nöropati ile ilişkili görme kaybı kalıcı oldu. Bu olgu sunumunda literatürde nadir olarak görülen herpes zoster oftalmikusa bağlı gelişen orbital apeks sendromu incelenmiştir.
