Impact of a refresher training on paediatric nurses’ realisation of their roles and functions

INTRODUCTION: To assess the impact of refresher training provided to pediatric nurses on the realization of their roles and functions in their nursing practices.
METHODS: The study was planned as single-group research with a pretest and posttest and conducted over the period June 2012 - January 2014 in the children's units of all of the state hospitals in Northern Cyprus. All nurses (n=85) working in these units volunteering to participate in the study were recruited. The refresher training program on the roles and functions of pediatric nurses was implemented four days a week for two weeks. Their mean scores on the pediatric nurses’ implementation of roles and functions inventory that was administered prior to and following the program were used to assess the realization of the nurses’ roles and functions.
RESULTS: The pediatric nurses' implementation of their roles and functions showed a significant improvement following the program. It was determined that the nurses' age had an impact on the subscale of the role of communicator and cooperator and that the position of the nurse had an impact on the subscale of the role of counselor.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: The results indicated that a program of regular and planned refresher training for pediatric nurses increased their awareness about the implementation of their roles and functions and consequently produced the potential of a positive impact on nursing practices.
Yenileme eğitiminin çocuk hemşirelerinin rol ve işlevlerini gerçekleştirme durumlarına etkisi

GİRİŞ ve AMAÇ: Çocuk hemşirelerine verilen yenileme eğitiminin, bakım uygulamalarındaki rol ve işlevlerini gerçekleştirme durumuna etkisini değerlendirmektir.
YÖNTEM ve GEREÇLER: Tek grup öntest - sontest desende planlanmış bu çalışmanın verileri, Haziran 2012- Ocak 2014 arasında, Kuzey Kıbrıs’taki tüm Devlet hastanelerinin çocuk ünitelerinde yapılmıştır. Çalışmaya, bu ünitelerde görevli olan tüm gönüllü hemşireler (n = 85) alınmıştır. Çocuk hemşirelerinin rol ve işlevlerini yenileme eğitimi, iki hafta boyunca, dört günde uygulanmıştır. Hemşirelerin rol ve işlevlerini gerçekleştirme durumları, uygulanan eğitim öncesi ve sonrasında çocuk hemşirelerinin rol ve işlevlerini uygulama ölçeğinin puan ortalamaları ile değerlendirilmiştir.
BULGULAR: Çocuk hemşirelerinin rol ve işlevlerini uygulamaya ilişkin durumları, eğitim sonrası anlamlı bir artış göstermiştir. İletişim ve işbirliği rolü alt ölçeği puanı üzerinde hemşire yaşının ve danışmanlık rolü alt ölçeği puanı üzerinde ise çalıştığı pozisyonun etkili olduğu belirlenmiştir.
TARTIŞMA ve SONUÇ: Sonuçlar, çocuk hemşirelerine düzenli ve planlı olarak verilen yenileme eğitiminin, hemşirelerin rol ve işlevlerine yönelik uygulama durumları konusundaki farkındalıklarını artırdığını ve dolayısıyla bakım uygulamalarını pozitif etkileme potansiyeline sahip olduğunu göstermiştir.
